This is Pinyin, the romanized Mandarin spelling system using Latin letters to write the Chinese language. Its offically described as representing sounds of Chinese characters, hence helping learners pronounce words correctly. The system incorporates 26 very unique sounding letters and combinations of letters that all have their own strict pronunciation laws and also has four different tone marks (flat, rising, falling-rising, falling) that indicate pitch.
